Making your domain stand out:
The next step beyond just giving out and writing down
your web address everywhere is making it more noticeable.
After all, if people do not know that you have a web site,
how are they going to get there? Here are some helpful
hints in making your web address more noticeable:
- Your
web address is not case sensitive so you need to capitalize
the first letters of various words so that it becomes
more readable and, therefore, more memorable (i.e.
www.JohnDoe.com or www.InsuranceInChicago.com ). Also,
if you have something other than .com, you may want
to capitalize that (i.e. www.JohnDoe.NET or www.InsuranceInChicago.ORG)
- If
you can color the web address, do so. Look at how
much the web addresses on this page stick out from
the black text. Bolding the web address can have a
similar effect, as well as shadowing or making a graphic
image out of it.
- People
read left to right and top to bottom, so anytime you
can put your address in the top left corner of a particular
advertisement, it becomes more noticeable (especially
when many people don't read the whole advertisement).
Giving
people reasons to visit your site:
The last step, after making the web address noticeable,
is to give people a reason to visit your site. They may
have no idea what your website has to offer. The number
and type of reasons depends on how much room you have
as well as your target audience. With a lot of room, use
bullet points to organize your services and make it easy
to read. Bullet points are less intimidating than a paragraph
to the average reader. With little room, a one-line power
phrase will do. Also, you need to know what kind of people
a particular advertisement will be reaching and gear your
sites features toward that audience. For bullet-pointed
advertisements more geared towards advertising your website,
try a postcard or newsletter something like this:

Benefits of visiting this site.
- Get
pertinent insurance information when you want it.
- Fill
out online forms for policy quotes without an office
visit for:
- Life

- Auto
insurance
- Homeowners
insurance
- etc.
- Find

your site)
Usually
you are not just devoting a full advertisement to your
site, and only have one-line to plug it. One of the keys
here is to know your target market that the advertisement
is reaching. If it is just reaching a general market like
a direct mail, just make it general.
